JA Solar's 220MW bifacial modules enter South Africa
JA Solar Secures 220MW Module Supply Deal in South Africa, Expands Global Green Footprint
JA Solar has signed a major module supply agreement with JUWI, a leading international renewable energy company, to deliver approximately 420,000 DeepBlue 4.0 Pro bifacial modules for two large-scale solar power projects in South Africa, with a total installed capacity of 220MW. This collaboration highlights JA Solar’s strong product capabilities and underscores its growing presence in emerging markets.
The two projects are both milestones in South Africa’s energy transition. The 100MW Sonvanger project is tailor-made for global mining giant Glencore and jointly developed by JUWI and Pele Green Energy. The 120MW Paarde Valley PV 2 project is backed by Sasol and Air Liquide, in partnership with TotalEnergies, Mulilo, and Reatile Group. Both projects are scheduled to be grid-connected by the end of 2026, with module installations spanning an area equivalent to over 160 football fields.
Located at the southern tip of Africa, South Africa features a hot climate with distinct wet and dry seasons—posing harsh environmental challenges for solar equipment. JA Solar’s DeepBlue 4.0 Pro modules, certified for reliability under salt mist, ammonia, dust, damp heat, and saline exposure, were highly recognized by JUWI and ultimately chosen for their proven performance in extreme conditions.
JA Solar has maintained a clear global strategy since its founding, focusing not only on mature solar markets but also on fast-growing regions. The company has recently made strong progress in emerging markets: signing a 500MW module agreement with Sri Lanka’s largest EPC contractor Hayleys Fentons, a 2GW cell supply MoU with KNACK ENERGY in India, and a 230MW module supply MoU with REMESA in Honduras. The new partnership with JUWI further solidifies JA Solar’s momentum in global clean energy expansion.
Once operational, the two projects are expected to generate 672,000 MWh of clean electricity annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 625,000 tons per year. Beyond environmental benefits, the projects will relieve pressure on South Africa’s power grid, reduce industrial electricity costs, and create local jobs, foster skill development, and drive sustainable economic growth.
Founded in 1996, JUWI is a globally recognized renewable energy developer headquartered in Germany. Its business spans solar, wind, and hybrid energy systems, offering EPC and O&M services worldwide with a team of around 1,300 employees.
Commenting on the partnership, Richard Doyle, Managing Director of JUWI South Africa, said:
"South Africa plans to add nearly 30GW of wind and solar capacity by 2030 while phasing out 11GW of coal generation in the near term. To secure the country’s energy future, we must accelerate the deployment of renewables like never before. We are proud to partner with a global technology leader like JA Solar to help drive this vital transformation."
